The Foundation is proud to inform all who follow us and take part in our activities that we are the Fiscal Agent for the Committee to STOP the WEST ROXBURY LATERAL Pipeline, or SWRL. This group works hard to protect their neighborhood and the City of Boston from the potential enormous dangers that are inherent in a high pressure fracked gas transmission pipeline to be installed less than 500 feet from a live quarry where regular blasts occur throughout the year.
IMPORTANT to NOTE: HIgh levels of radiation are in fracked gas!
The reason for this is when they extract the gas from 6000 feet below the earth's surface, they seek out the uranium rich deposits where there are greater gas deposits. The gas therefore has high levels of radon that are in the range of 37-41 picoCuries/liter. The EPA recommends that levels of radon inside our homes not exceed .4 picoCuries/liter and outside, not beyond 4 picoCuries/liter. Otherwise, high levels of radiation leads to lung cancer and other respiratory illnesses. The level of radon in fracked gas according to one source is equivalent to 1200 times the amount of radiation of living next to a nuclear power plant. (References: Dr. VE Swanson, Mr. David Lewis and http://www.dangersoffracking.com/)
By the way, Spectra Energy's pipeline (the same one coming to Boston) crosses the path of two nuclear power plants. One next to New York City - Indian Head Nuclear Power Plant in Westchester County - which they cannot guarantee a three minute shutoff - and could put NYC in grave danger. The second one is Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant, just 30 miles north of Boston in Seabrook,NH. There are unnecessary risks along the entire pipeline and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has yet to respond to these issues inspite of public outcry.
The planet needs your voice!
Please refer to SWRL's website for more information about the hazards of this pipeline.
